U2 – Desire

“Desire” is a song by U2 and the third track on their 1988 album, Rattle and Hum. Released as the album’s lead single, “Desire” was the band’s first number-one single in the UK and Australia. It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and topped both the Modern and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, the first song to reach the top of both of these charts simultaneously. It reached number two on the Dutch Top 40. In 1989, “Desire” won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car (live)

“Fast Car” is a single by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. It was released in April 1988 from her self-titled debut album. Her appearance on the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute was the catalyst for the song’s becoming a top 10 hit in the US, peaking at number 6 on the Hot 100, and a top 10 hit the UK, peaking at number 4 on the charts there. In April 2011, the song re-entered the charts in the United Kingdom after being performed by a participant, Michael Collings, on Britain’s Got Talent.

Danzig – Mother

“Mother” is a song by American rock group Danzig. It was originally released in August 1988 as the lead single from their debut album, Danzig. In 1993–1994, almost six years after its original release, the song became a hit on radio and earned Buzz Bin rotation on MTV after a music video incorporating live footage was created to promote the band’s new EP, Thrall: Demonsweatlive. This version of the song was retitled “Mother ’93”.

Dire Straits – Romeo and Juliet (live at Wembley with Eric Clapton)

“Romeo and Juliet” is a song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by singer and lead guitarist Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies and was released as a single in 1981. Reviewer Dan Bolles has called the song a “classic”. The song subsequently appeared on the Dire Straits live albums Alchemy and On the Night, and later on Knopfler’s live duet album with Emmylou Harris, Real Live Roadrunning (though Harris does not perform on the track). The track was also featured on the greatest hits albums Money for Nothing, Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits, and The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations.

The La’s – There She Goes

“There She Goes” is a song written by British singer/guitarist Lee Mavers and recorded first by Mavers’ band, The La’s. Structurally, the song is very simple and contains no verses, only a single chorus repeated four times and a bridge. The song borrows from The Velvet Underground’s “There She Goes Again”, particularly the accents that separate the choruses.
